Hannes Soomer (MPM WILSport Racedays), who had been in 10th position for a long time, finished 17th today at the third round of the Supersport World Championship in Aragon, Spain.
Soomer, who started from tenth place, was happy with his start. At the start of the race he briefly grabbed 9th place, made a risky overtake with Isaac Vinales and went off the track briefly, British Kyle Smith overtook Soomer and the Estonian held on to 10th.
"I was in a group that started in sixth place. Most of the race followed the same scenario - I was with the others for the first three quarters of the way, but on the long straight I lost about ten bike lengths, which I then had to make up with the rest of the way," said Soomer. This was also shown by his sector times, when he was in the top five in both sectors two and three, but fifteenth in four.
Soomer crashed in the seventh corner on the last lap, but managed to get back into the race and finished 17th. "I tightened up because I wanted to be in a good position on the last lap in case somebody messed something up," he explained. "I understand that the crash was unnecessary, but I'm happy with the rest of my race today."
"The motorcycle is about 10 km/h short of the top speed to fight at the front. The team has done an unreal job to get the bike to ride superbly in terms of handling. We also managed to keep the tyre very well today, we didn't lose as much to qualifying in this cold wind as the others," said Soomer. "Before next week's Assen stage, the bikes will go to the stand for a short time in the Netherlands, so I hope it will be possible and possible to improve something in terms of power."
The race, which was a nail-biter in the bitterly cold winds, with the top four constantly changing positions, was won by Randy Krumenacher (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) of Switzerland, who also leads the World Championship. Soomer is 15th with 6 points.
The next, fourth round of the Supersport series will take place in Assen, the Netherlands, next weekend.
