Hannes Soomer (MPM WILSport Racedays) finished the sixth round of the Supersport World Championship in Jerez, Spain, in 11th place due to a very bad start.
"I made the worst start of my life today - somehow the zig-zag was too much on the back wheel," said Soomer - he dropped from 12th on the grid to just 17th, losing just over 4 seconds to the leaders at the end of the first lap, and from there it was very difficult to move up.
Gradually, however, Soomer's position improved. With 15 laps to go, he was in 11th place. On the 11th lap, Ayrton Badovini overtook him briefly, but when the Italian's tyre wore out, Soomer passed him again and finished 11th, scoring 5 World Championship points.
"The bike worked, but it was noticeable that there wasn't enough time to set it up. Also, I didn't have any very good laps in the race this time, but I didn't have any bad ones either. All in all, it was a good day for the weekend," said Soomer. He is a realist and admits that a place in the top ten is currently what the technique allows.
For the seventh round of the World Championships in Misano in two weeks' time, he hopes to go into today's event better prepared technically.
In the end, Federico Caricasulo (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) from Italy won the race, which was a nail-biter with four different riders holding the lead. Hannes Soomer lost 26,792 seconds to him. Caricasulo's team-mate Randy Krummenacher (Switzerland) leads the World Championship with 135 points. Soomer is 15th with 18 points.
